The Carlyle Letters Online

The correspondence of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle illustrates the astonishing vibrancy of what Carlyle himself called “the biographical phasis” of human experience. Their letters illuminate the interior world of Victorian England at the same time as they stimulate readers to reconsider the exterior historical record from the vantage points of two highly idiosyncratic and fiercely independent observers. As the digital parent of the VLLC, The Carlyle Letters Online (http://carlyleletters.dukejournals.org/), published by Duke University Press since 2007, serves as both the inspiration for creating the VLLC and as a model for the development of its member sites.
